Capt. “Sully” landed his disabled plane on the Hudson safely because he had practiced similar landings on a flight simulator. Healthcare personnel need similar training opportunities for rare but critical events as well as for routine activities. We will present CliniSpace™ - a next generation online immersive training environment that replicates the familiar surroundings of daily work in a hospital – and we will use it to discuss numerous different learning opportunities. These will include clinical decision making, communication skills, and protocols, for critical events as well as routine care. We will use these examples to open a discussion on the value and the problems in using these “healthcare simulators” to augment the learning process.
About the presenters
Parvati Dev, PhD, leads Innovation in Learning Inc., developing simulation-based learning in immersive online environments. Her background includes a doctorate in electrical engineering, research in computational neuroscience and in 3D medical imaging, and eighteen years as director of the SUMMIT lab at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Wm LeRoy Heinrichs, MD, PhD, leads medical development at IIL after fifteen years of research into simulation and virtual reality-based learning at the SUMMIT lab. Prior to SUMMIT, he was chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he introduced the new science of laparoscopic surgery and, through that experience, conceptualized the value of safe training through simulated surgery.
